Oh, and since I mentioned grammar yesterday, let me just add a few more pet peeves while it's on topic. Then I'll shut up.
A drug is a substance. Items and the proverbial cat are dragged.
Curtains are hung. People are hanged.
There is no long eeeee in mischievous. It is pronounced
miss-chev-us.

Also, misused and missplled words drive me crazy. These the people who going make our world after I am gone. Makes me shudder.

As an actor I turn to the Kenyon and Knott(a pronouncing dictionary),quite a bit.,and ooo do I hate to hear mischievous ,mispronounced. Conversely I have an unrequited affair with the punctuation mark,"the comma".
I like your blog, but have one slight correction. If you visit Merriam Webster and type in "mischievous," you'll find that it can be pronounced two ways. You can click the little speakers to hear both of them.

Carrie, I did some googling, and found all links backing up my pronunciation. Your link even says that pronunciation is 'non-standard'.

Love this debate!!! Though my punctuation is often (offin)questionable,my pronunciation is rarely wrong. I love the Kenyon and Knott and I love the link you provided.Another word NEVER pronounced correctly is strawberry. The emphasis should be on the 2nd syllable(with that 2nd syllable pronounced as a schwaa sound) as in Straw-BUH-ry. I know, so strange I often feel prissy saying it that way myself.
Mischeivous or mischivus is the ONLY acceptable sound to my ear.
Words that are improperly used...The ones that most disturb me are - "impact" and "dialogue" when used as verbs. So corporate-speak!
In some very old cookbooks that my mom used there are recipes for Salmon Wiggle and Shrimp Wiggle. You got it, wiggle = "encased in gelatin."
Might I add the new over- and incorrect use of "learnt" on many sewing/craft blogs. I am fairly certain the individual "learned" the skill! Just another annoying pet peeve!
