Actually Barb, it's the BLM that is talking about euthanizing them, not the ranchers. There are approximately 30,000 wild horses and burros in America and over 15% of them are in Northern Ca. A friend of mine has done about 2 dozen adoptions, and she says that this announcement from BLM is a ploy to get more of them adopted. I hope it works too :-)
This is a sad story if wild horse have to be killed. Not long ago, i read a blog from a ranch which held 250 wild mares on contract to the BLM. They were to be adopted.
There may not be too many horses but too many cattle competing for forage.
Perhaps, they could be distributed better on federal land. Canada has a few in the interior of BC maybe Canada would take some in.
There is a market for horse meat but special slaghtering facilities is needed. The Japanese eat horse meat. The French eat pony.
I hope a solution is found.
What came 1st- the ranchers or the horses? Can't the land be designated some sort of wild life zone? Ranchers were taking a lot of virgin rain forest in South America as far back as the 1980s and little was done. I think Mc Donalds were the ones wanting the beef.
Horses are such special animals.
