Shudder Crafts

I do appreciate efforts to reuse and recycle, and to find alternative sources for fabric. Sometimes, however, the idea of "crafts" carries a bad connotation. One thinks of church bazaars and school fairs with googly-eyed pom-pom animals, macrame lampshades, or (insert worst bazaar item here. Or bizarre. Whatever the case may be). Here's another one of those ideas that make you think, wt?

Pantyhose Craft Book, 1978. That quilt on the cover is actually pretty cool. It is made using the stronger top portion of pantyhose, and is then dyed.

But this is just creepy. The fact the book calls this a "dinner ring" just cracks me up. More like, "look mommy, my very own pet witch!". Eeeewww.

I actually really like the rug, but those mirrors? Those are scary. Those would give me nightmares.

And now, the piece de resistance: a "room divider". As if natural tone pantyhose wouldn't be hideous enough, these are supposedly dyed coral, then tied over beads and brightly colored yarn.
Okay, that's just wrong.

sooo sooo wrong! I remember making one of those horrid little pantyhose heads and mounting it on top of a wooden spoon for sale at a craft bazaar. Fortunately, time has blocked many of the details from my mind!
