Vintage photograph ladies in San Diego
I'm a sucker for vintage photographs of San Diego.
This one is an ebay purchase, so I don't know the location of this interesting 'sculpture' these ladies are seated upon, nor the history of the ladies themselves.

On the back of the photo, writing indicates this was taken February 1920.
Writing on the top front says San Diego, and another word I can't make out.
The ladies are identified as Mae (or is it Mar?), Billie, and Peggy, and they are suited up fancy indeed!

My mom made a guess that this was taken in front of the US Grant Hotel, because she remembers a balcony like that.
I'm wondering if it might be closer to the port.
Does anyone know?

kuzvrlkYes, that is definitely in front of The US GRANT Hotel in San Diego. Given the perspective, the photo was taken in Horton Plaza Park, just to the west of the fountain and looking towards the Broadway entrance to the hotel. The balcony no longer looks like that because the Palm Terrace was closed in during the mid-20th century to create a ballroom, but that was how it appeared in 1920.

This is entirely supposition, but I'm thinking that "sculpture" might be a set of rotating floodlights? I could be entirely wrong, though - maybe it was a grand opening of something or other - even movie premieres used to have those... It's a cool shot, whatever it is. :)

I think the word is Cal, as in California.
