Two for now

I haven't blogged about cute boys in awhile, and that seems like a fine way to start the New Year!

Funny, as I get older I gravitate to the more geeky men (well, these guys just play geeks on tv).
Two actors that I think are luscious:
Matthew Gray Gubler from Criminal Minds

and Brendon Hines from Lie To Me

Um, now you know why I love tv!

Video Sunday

The recent Grammy awards included two absolutely amazing performances.
First and foremost, the legendary Radiohead.
Thom Yorke is backed by the USC Trojan Marching Band (who, in my opinion, stole the show. They rocked!)
Hopefully the video is still up (copyright, you know...don't the powers that be realize these videos sell their records? Hello...). See it here.

Also, Adele, with Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland, singing "Chasing Pavements" (the first two YouTube versions I originally saved have already been pulled. So frustrating)

Potato Stew--yum!

I am, for the most part, a vegetarian.
And I love potato soup.
Recipes often add leeks, or carrots, but this is the first time it's so unadorned yet full of flavor.
This dish is called Locro de Papas, or Potato Stew.

I saw it made on a recent episode of Gourmet Magazine's Diary of a Foodie.
Watch a clip of the episode here.

I live so close to Mexico's border that I was able to purchase annatto seeds in my local supermarket.
If you can't find them in the Latin section of your store, or at a tiendita (Mexican grocer), I'm sure you can find them online (I know they're on Amazon).
The seeds are used to flavor and color the oil, so when the oil is added to the potatoes, the result is a wonderful orange hue.

Honestly, the avocado is essential. Who knew this combination could be so amazing?!

Locro de Papas
This traditional Andean soup, warm with potatoes, milk, and cheese and bright with cumin and avocado, may be the ultimate comfort food.
2 teaspoons annatto (achiote) seeds
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 1/2 lb russet (baking) potatoes
1 cup chopped white onion
Rounded 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
2 1/4 teaspoons salt
3/4 teaspoon black pepper
7 cups water
1 cup whole milk
5 1/2 oz queso fresco (Mexican fresh cheese) or ricotta salata, coarsely grated (1 1/4 cups)
2 (6- to 7-oz) firm-ripe avocados
Heat annatto seeds and oil in a very small saucepan over low heat, swirling pan frequently, until oil is bright red-orange and starts to simmer, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, peel potatoes and cut into 3/4-inch pieces.
Pour annatto oil through a fine-mesh sieve into a wide 7- to 8-quart heavy pot, discarding solids. Cook onion and half of potatoes (reserve remaining potatoes in a bowl of cold water) in annatto oil over moderately high heat, stirring, until onion is softened, 3 to 5 minutes. Add cumin, salt, and pepper and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Add water (7 cups) and bring to a boil, scraping up any brown bits. Reduce heat and simmer, partially covered, until potatoes are very tender, 25 to 30 minutes, then mash into broth. Drain remaining potatoes and add to stew, then simmer, partially covered, until tender, about 20 minutes. Stir in milk and cheese and increase heat to high, then bring to a simmer, stirring. Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper.
Meanwhile, quarter avocados lengthwise, then pit, peel, and cut into 1/2-inch cubes.
Serve stew in large soup bowls, topped with avocado.

So You Think You Can Dance - Bollywood Edition

Wow, how amazing is this? So inspiring.
I love the symbolism.
I love how, as Mia said, dance is a universal language, and so many elements of various cultures intertwine.

I work with an older man who is from India.
He is soft spoken, always positive, wears sweater vests that his mom knit for him, and arranged marriages for his daughters.
He is kind and sweet but shy.
One day we got on the subject of dance, and he raised up his arms and made a motion of such grace and fluidity that I was blown away.
A split second spoke of tradition and culture and sensuality,
Now I am forever fascinated with this style of movement.

Whew

Thank God Janelle wasn't eliminated tonight on
Step it Up and Dance.
Bottom two with Cody...I was starting to get pissed.
Whew, both were safe.

And Yay!--Oscar is back! What a great bonus.
And next week, I can't wait for So You Think You Can Dance.
Yeah, I know, tv geek.

There was a time, when I was late teens to early 20's, when I considered following a career path in dance.
I think I made a mistake not pursuing that.

Blech

Honestly, must the audience on American Idol always do that stupid synchronized wave thing?
I just wanna barf.

Ho hum

Well, this season's Project Runway is over (and I'm happy with the result), but I laughed out loud when I saw this prophecy.

And, sigh, Idol just isn't going to be as much fun without Danny Noriega.
I'm bummed about that.
Blake was great tonight though, wasn't he?!

Me...I'm rooting for the rocker nurse

Okay, you guys already know I love my tv.
Truth is, it's just more fun to craft or sew with the tv on.
So, that being said, are you watching American Idol?

Granted, most of America is pissed that Josiah didn't make it,
especially in light of the fact that several of the contestants, ahem, aren't altogether amateur.

And Project Runway...gotta love that show.
If you read Blogging Project Runway, those of you outside the UK can also watch video from Project Catwalk.
So so good.
This season's Project Runway wasn't (I say thankfully) filled with as much cat fighting, but we do have a new adjective.
Fierce!
Love him or hate him, Christian just cracks me up.
Oh my God, he is so fierce...he's beast--you just don't know! (wink)

What do you mean you can't design a room around a cat?

Once upon a time, I considered a career in interior design. Three years and a fortune in student loans later...I left the program.
I dropped out.

If my reaction to the judges of Bravo's Top Design is any indication...
I made the right choice.

Their comments are so lame, so snobbish, so incorrect, it just makes my stomach turn.

Okay, I feel better now. I just had to vent.

I admit it: I'm an Apprentice junkie

It's somewhat ironic that I'm addicted to this show. I always have thought of myself as anti-big business, anti-corporate antics.
But I love the show.

This is what I don't get though (and I say this while knowing I am not perfectly skilled grammatically. I hope I at least have some command of the English language). I mean, these candidates are supposedly the best and the brightest. These are CEOs, Harvard alumni, attorneys...

Here are some snippets of conversation spoken by the two team leaders.
I really liked Heidi, the team leader of the winning side, until this came out of her mouth:
"someone else could have went."

Uh, English 101, Heidi. Gone versus went. Simple, really.

Then Frank, the brash, groveling team leader of the losing side:
"(he) could have gave a little more" and "if a landslide had blew me (over)".

Uh, again, remedial English sir. Given. Blown.

It's embarrassing.
Sorry, I had to mention it because it's a pet peeve.
Like when people say "I seen" when it should be "saw". That drives me nuts.

Okay, off my soapbox now....

Sting, Sweet Baby James, and a big ass tree

Geez, my third post in one day!
It was a great way to wind up the day. In fact, I may have to send KPBS a check for the privilege.

Did any of you guys see the special on tv tonight, "Music Cares man of the year: James Taylor"?
Amazing.
It's surprising that I have never learned to play music when I love it so.

I have eclectic musical preferences, but my favorite is probably folk music.
It's so jolly feel good. But in a genuine way.
Besides, I got to see Sting twice tonight. Once performing in a tribute to James, and again at the tree opening at the Rockefeller Center (which I vow to see live once in my life). And in between an incredible video about Ocean Beach that I plan to purchase a copy of right away.
I really don't watch as much tv as it seems like I do....
Sigh...

Nothing quite as joyous as standing a couple of inches away from the tv, singing and dancing.
Ha! There. Now you know my secret.
