Another Bias Tape Pattern

I continue to be fascinated by vintage patterns using bias tape to make appliques.
The newest addition to my collection features ducks, birds, a sun, and a ship.

This pattern was a Kate Marchbanks mail order.
The date is not indicated, and the postmark on the envelope is not legible.

The unique thing about this pattern is that there are designs inside for several more items.

and what they call a Cock Motif
(it looks like Pennsylvannia Dutch to me):


These would make a cute quilt! Especially a baby quilt!
They were used for decorating aprons or children's clothing.
The designs were intended to be used with polka dotted or plaid bias tapes--once plentiful, but now difficult to find.
Then again, I guess it's a lot easier to make your own these days, with lots of bias tape makers on the market.
The designs are embellished with embroidery.

Another vintage embroidered towel

Here's the other embroidered floursack dishtowel that I mentioned in my previous post.
I can't even believe I scored this for 50 cents. Wow.

First of all, I love fruit motifs, especially pineapples.
I tend to gravitate to Hawaiian and Pacific Island designs.
I especially appreciate the asymmetry in this piece--how the outline in black makes the leaves of the pineapple pop.
I love how white space is left to simulate how light would hit the fruit, and thereby give the shapes definition.
Very artistic.

Lovely vintage linens

I found this at a thrift shop the other day for 50 cents.
It's hand embroidered on a big flour sack dishtowel.

It is well used, and hopefully it was well loved, so it has stains and holes...
but it's still charming.

I could cut the design off the old towel and make it an applique and thereby save it.
Or, I could just continue to use it.
I haven't decided yet.

The shop had miscellaneous linens, and there were two other towels there embroidered with a Dutch girl motif.
My friend debs is of Dutch heritage, so I briefly considered buying them for her, then decided against it because it's not really her style.
Then I came home and mentally popped myself in the head.
What was I thinking? They were two for a dollar! Helloooo....
I went back today, and they were gone. Aarrgghhh.
I mean, even as a gift wrap they would have been adorable.
I did, however, pick up another with a pineapple motif that I love, so the trip was still worthwhile.

Bias tape Birds

Pattern to make birds from pieces of bias tape and embroidered details.
Mail order pattern from 1969.

These were intended to embellish little girls' dresses, aprons, and towels.
A quilt would be nice too.

This booklet from 1945 features design ideas using a handheld loom.


Look at all the great weaving designs possible, just from varying color and direction.

Vintage goodness, little girls weaving

Hi!

I'm able to use a client's computer all week, so hopefully I can play catch up on this blog and on blog reading.
Whew! It's exhausting!

I posted a new theme for my purse challenge today, and a killer prize too, so check it out.

For now I think I'll just show a cute vintage children's cookbook I picked up on ebay.
The illustrations are precious.
The book was published in 1952.
